Trivia[]

  • U2 are shown to be touring in the PopMart Tour, which coincided with the release date of the episode. They play "Pride (In The Name of Love)," with images of Homer being beaten up by security staff on the screens behind them, ironically as the lines "in the name of love" are being sung.
    • U2's head of Principal Management Paul McGuinness and Susie Smith, an employee of Principal Management and Adam Clayton's then girlfriend also make brief appearances in the episode as themselves. Smith is the bald camera control operator, McGuiness lets Homer by after claiming he's the "potato man."
    • Interestingly, the version of the song used for the episode is not actually taken from the 1997-1998 PopMart Tour, but rather the "Rattle and Hum" live/studio album recordings which released in 1988, about ten years earlier during U2's "The Joshua Tree Tour."
  • This episode was dedicated to Linda McCartney, who died shortly before the episode's premiere.
  • The original idea for the script would be for the entire town to be raised by hydraulics, then come back down to squash all the garbage, but was dismissed as being too ridiculous.
  • The script originally planned to have Homer run for mayor. Homer eventually does so in the episode "See Homer Run".
  • Homer says the quote 'I don't apologize. I'm sorry but it's just the way I am' in The Simpsons Game.
  • The events of this episode were later referenced in "Viva Ned Flanders" due to Lisa saying "I wonder why we took [Monty Burns' Casino] with us when we moved the town?"
  • Due to Springfield being relocated five miles down the road because of all the trash, every new episode after this one has Springfield in a new location.

Cultural References[]

  • Love day is a reference to Valentines day being created by Greeting card companies.
  • This episode's title references the 1981 film "Clash of the Titans".
  • Ray Patterson's remarks about how he is moving away from Springfield and the people can wallow in the mess they made by electing Homer was reference to a 1990 show in Las Vegas where Redd Foxx was billed. Twelve people were in attendance. Foxx was introduced via a band that played the theme music to Sanford and Son, whereupon an angry Foxx stated he would not perform for such a meager audience and walked off. The band, not certain of what to do, played the Sanford and Son theme music once again.
  • Rock The Vote is a non-profit progressive-aligned group in the United States whose stated mission is "to engage and build the political power of young people. The organization was founded in 1990 by Virgin Records America Co-Chairman Jeff Ayeroff, to encourage young people to vote and is known for its celebrity spokespeople and its partnership with MTV.
  • The final scene of the teary-eyed Indian was reference to the Keep America Beautiful PSA starring Iron Eyes Cody. This was later referenced in the Futurama episode "Where the Buggalo Roam".
  • "The Garbage Man" song is a parody of "The Candy Man" from the film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.
  • During "The Garbage Man", Oscar the Grouch appears.
  • The name Sir Loves-a-Lot is a reference to the name, Sir Lancelot.

Goofs[]

  • Palecletus

    Pale-skinned Cletus

As Homer takes out the trash, a red object on the bottom left of the trash pile turns pink for a frame.
  • When Homer gives his first speech to the town, Cletus Spuckler has pale yellow skin.
  • Weirdcolor

Apu with yellow skin and Wiggum with black hair

At one point, during the scenes in the town hall, Apu is seen appearing with yellow skin and Chief Wiggum is seen with black hair among the townspeople.
  • When Ned comes to complain, a window can be seen on second storey of the house and it is shown to be the bathroom window, but in the house, there is no window nor bathroom on that spot. In a later shot the window is gone.
  • When Homer needed money, it never occurred to anyone (even Lisa) to replace the paid employees with volunteers. It may have been likely none were available.
