Treehouse of Horror VII
You Only Move Twice

Trivia

  • We learn that Kodos is female; she is Kang's sister. However, this is contradicted in other episodes (probably because Kang either must have said "sister" by mistake or he is just confused of his gender).
  • This is the sixth Treehouse of Horror to have the cast's names changed due to Halloween e.g. Bat Groening. The first five being Treehouse of Horror II, Treehouse of Horror III, Treehouse of Horror IV, Treehouse of Horror V and Treehouse of Horror VI.
  • The TV credits from the Season 2-early Season 20 opening sequence now has the "Created By/Developed By" TV credits in the same color and font as in the THOH end credits sequences.
  • The (now-defunct) Madison, WI-based ska band "I Voted For Kodos" took their name from Homer's line at the end of the "Citizen Kang" segment.
  • When Kang and Kodos turn into Bob Dole and Bill Clinton, the resulting light has been cut in TV airings to avoid seizures.
  • In this episode, the Gracie Films logo has an even higher pitched and shrill scream, which fans say that is slightly more scary than the original scream. It is possible that it is a little girl's scream, due to how higher it is compared to the woman's scream in most THOH episodes.
  • This is the first Treehouse of Horror episode to double as a season premiere, with the others later being Treehouse of Horror XI, Treehouse of Horror XII, Treehouse of Horror XIII, Treehouse of Horror XIV, and Treehouse of Horror XV.
  • Among the objects seen in the attic in "The Thing and I" are Marge's painting of Ringo Starr from Brush with Greatness, Bart's guitar from The Otto Show, and a book about The Be Sharps referencing Homer's Barbershop Quartet. There is also a shirt saying "I Don Do It" which is presumably a misprint of "I Didn't Do It" from Bart Gets Famous.
  • In "The Thing and I" when Bart lifts up his shirt to see the scar, you can already see that the scar is on the wrong side (right side).
  • This episode (more specifically, The Genesis Tub) was referenced in the South Park episode, "Simpsons Already Did It".
  • This is the second Treehouse segment to feature Kang and Kodos in a main role since Hungry are the Damned in Treehouse of Horror.
  • Grim Reaper from the couch gag of this episode reappeared in the Reaper Madness segment from Treehouse of Horror XIV.

Citations

  • The Hunchback of Notre Dame: Hugo, representing Quasimodo, is living up in the attic.
  • Basket Case: Hugo wanting to be sewn back together.
  • The King and I: The segment title, "The Thing and I", is a parody of the film and play, "The King and I".
  • Twilight Zone: "The Genesis Tub" is inspired by the 1962 Twilight Zone episode "The Little People", where astronauts stumble upon a tiny civilization on an asteroid.
  • The Outer Limits: "The Genesis Tub" also closely resembles the two-part series premiere of the modern incarnation of "Outer Limits" titled "Sandkings" (parts I and II respectively) which first aired a year and a half prior to THOH VII. The main character "grows" his own mini-civilization which experiences rapid generational advances, and begins to build complex structures out of the sand. The main character becomes power-crazed with a "god complex".
  • Claw Game: The way Homer is abducted is reminiscent of the claw game (giant claw picking him up) and its difficulty (dropping him first time around).
  • Citizen Kane: The segment title, "Citizen Kang", is a parody of the 1941 film "Citizen Kane".
  • Scooby Doo: When Homer unmasks the presidential candidates, everyone has the same reaction as Scooby Doo and his gang whenever they rip off the masks of the villains.
  • Fish-Heads: Homer sings "Fish-Heads" by Barnes & Barnes while bringing a bucket full of fish heads to Hugo Simpson II.
  • Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope: Kang commissioning the construction of a giant cannon to be fired at "a moon that [Earth] hadn't even heard of before" may have been a reference to the Death Star and its attempt at firing on Yavin 4.
