Cultural references

  • The opening titles is similar to the Kayro-Vue show The Munsters.
  • The title G-G-Ghost D-D-Dad is a reference to the 1990 fantasy comedy film Ghost Dad. The G-G-Ghost part references Casper the Friendly Ghost.
  • Lenny's death by the dolphins is similar to how Jaws killed Crissy.
  • The title Scary Tales Can Come True is a reference to the lyrics "Fairy tales can come true" from the song Young at Heart. The plot is a parody of Grimms' Fairy Tales which simplifies into "Rapunzel," "The 3 Billy Goats Gruff," "Hansel and Gretel," and "Goldilocks and the Three Bears".
  • Night of the Dolphin is a parody of the 1973 science-fiction thriller film The Day of the Dolphin.
  • Grandpa being eaten by the dolphin is similar to the sequence in A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors.
  • All the ways that Homer is almost killed is similar to deaths in the Final Destination series.
  • The way the dolphins watch the Springfieldians the same as The Birds.
  • In Orca it features about killer whales (cf. killer dolphins).
  • The scene in which Snorky jumps to freedom in slow motion is ripped off from Free Willy.
  • The witch casts a spell to Homer makes him grow donkey ears impersonating Pinocchio.
  • In Sesame Street, the handsome prince asks Rapunzel to let down her hair, and as she does. It all lands on the ground and the princess ends up bald, just like the scene with Homer.
  • In the Brady Bunch, Jan gets the last name of her imaginary boyfriend by looking at a glass, and adding "George" (cf. the witch and the cauldron) who later turns out to be real.
  • Groundskeeper Willie gets impaled by a dolphin flying through the window, similar to the death of Baltus Van Tassal in the movie Sleepy Hollow.
  • In the Omen, Willie's death is an amalgam of several deaths.
  • In the Grifters someone gets beaten up with a sack of oranges.
  • In the Untouchables another possible inspiration for the baby carriage. 
  • In Battleship Potemkin the baby carriage rolls down the stairs during a gun battle. 
  • Moe who is a troll looks similar into Treasure Troll Dolls.
  • When the Simpson family lives in a pumpkin shell it parodys the nursery rhyme of Peter Peter Pumpkin Eater.
  • When Comic Book Guy is getting bashed in the head and neck with the car door, it is reminiscent of the scene with Joe Pesci from Raging Bull.
  • As Homer unwittingly mentions the title of this Sheena Easton hit when he eats through the literal sugar walls of the gingerbread house it references the song Sugar Walls.
