Opening sequence

• The music in the scenes with the Mayan Indians is based on Apocalypto.

The Greatest Story Ever Holed

• The segment title is a pun on The Greatest Story Ever Told.
  • This segment has the third title that makes a reference to this movie; the others were "The Wettest Stories Ever Told" and "The Greatest Story Ever D'ohed."
• The segment is a reference to the Large Hadron Collider.

UNnormal Activity

• The segment title and the segment itself is a parody of Paranormal Activity.

Bart & Homer's Excellent Adventure

• The title is a pun on Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure.
• References to Back to the Future:
  • The segment's plotline is a parody of the movie's.
  • The music in the sequences where Bart travels through time is similar to the movie's soundtrack.

• This was one of the two Treehouse of Horror episodes to be aired before the World Series, the other one being "Treehouse of Horror XX."
• So far, this is the earliest Treehouse of Horror to air.
• The last time Homer videotaped himself speaking with the Flanders' video camera only for it to backfire occurred in "One Fish, Two Fish, Blowfish, Blue Fish."
