- One of the segments will feature a Back to the Future-style story, where one of the music in the segments features Bart traveling back in time.
- One of the segments will also feature a parody of Paranormal Activity.
- "The Greatest Story Ever Holed" is a reference to "The Greatest Story Ever Told." Other titles references to the movie in the show was in two episodes: "The Wettest Stories Ever Told" and "The Greatest Story Ever D'ohed."
- The music in the segments with the Mayans Indians is based on Apocalypto.
- The Mayan segment is based on 2012 phenomenon, which says that the world will end in December 21st, 2012.

- The last time world end was referenced in Treehouse of Horror is "Treehouse of Horror X," where the segment "Life's A Glitch, Then You Die" was based on the Year 2000 problem.
- This was one of the two Treehouse of Horror episodes to be aired before the World Series, the other one being "Treehouse of Horror XX."
