Cultural References[]
General[]
- This is the show's 600th episode.
- This is the seventh time where a possible relationship between Bart Simpson and Sherri or Terri Mackleberry was hinted. The others were "Homer's Odyssey", "Bart the Lover", "Bart Star", "Hello Gutter, Hello Fadder", "Hungry, Hungry Homer" and "Barthood".
- During the "600" song, logos of some other FOX series appear while the song says that they are bad (despite that The Critic and Futurama were made by people who used to work on The Simpsons and both are considered fan favorites by viewers). The series are Drextell's Class, Babes, Herman's Head, Woops!, Too Something, House of Buggin', Sit Down, Shut Up, Celebrity Boxing, The Littlest Groom, Man vs. Beast, Allen Gregory, The Critic, Futurama and Orville (referred to as "Untitled Seth MacFarlane Show 2017").
- Because of the brutal violence and scenes of death involving child characters in "Dry Hard" and "B.F.F. R.I.P", this episode became notable for airing past watershed/primetime viewing hours on New Zealand network TVNZ, as well as being banned in Japan and aired post-watershed in the United Kingdom.
- This is also the second episode to be banned from Japanese airings. The first was the season 10 episode "Thirty Minutes Over Tokyo", which was banned due to a reference to a banned Pokemon episode that sent 685 children to the hospital after experiencing seizures.
Intro[]
- In the intro, Homer's costume resembles Bender from Futurama, Marge is an ice cream cone (probably a reference to Phineas Q. Butterfat's 5600 Flavors Ice Cream Parlor), Bart is a dinosaur (probably a reference to Bartzilla), Lisa is a recycling bin and Maggie resembles Charlie Chaplin.
- When Maggie kills the Simpson family's enemies, she has an eye painting similar to Alex from the movie A Clockwork Orange.
- Frank Grimes references to the 600th episode mark saying "In hell they make you watch them all in a row". This is possibly a reference to a 13 day marathon that happened on FXX to celebrate the milestone, where all 600 episodes of The Simpsons were aired in a row.
- The "Planet of the Couches" couch gag is an obvious parody of Planet of the Apes.
Dry Hard[]
- The name of the segment is a reference to the movie series Die Hard.
- The fight between the kids in Springfield in order to win a chance to enjoy water is a parody of The Hunger Games.
- This segment is a parody of Mad Max: Fury Road.
- Mr. Burns reenacts one of the dance scenes from the movie Flashdance.
- Lisa says that after the river dried a drought of Chicago Cubs sized proportions hit Springfield, referencing the drought of World series wins for the Cubs, although they did win the World Series in 2016.
- The first bottle of alcohol Homer is drinking is called Logan's Rum, a reference to the science action film Logans Run and also appears in second segment "BFF R.I.P".
BFF R.I.P.[]
- "BFF" and "R.I.P." are two acronyms for "Best Friends Forever" and "Rest In Peace".
- The segment itself is probably a parody of the supernatural horror movie Lights Out.
Moefinger[]
- The name of this segment is a parody of Goldfinger, a movie from the James Bond series.
- The segment itself parodies action movies such as Kingsman and the James Bond series itself, with the scene where Moe attacks Kearney with a beer cup and the final fight at the church referencing Kingsman.
- Homer held a Steely Dan concert at the Duff Stadium. He asks them to play Babylon Sister from the album Gaucho during the fight scene.
Trivia[]
Intro[]
- The promotional material for this episode shows Russ Cargill among the villains trying to kill the Simpson family, but in the final episode, he is not there.
- This is the second Treehouse of Horror episode in a row where Sideshow Bob is decapitated.
- The episode's script reveal that Kang was the one who appeared in the intro.
- Also, this episode broke the tradition of Kang and Kodos appearing in every Treehouse of Horror episode, as only Kang appears.
Dry Hard[]
- Maggie does not appear during this segment.
BFF R.I.P.[]
- So far, this is one of the shortest titles for a Treehouse of Horror segment, with six letters, The same as Homer³ (Homer Cubed) from "Treehouse of Horror VI".
Moefinger[]
- In Moe's lair, when Moe is kissing a picture of Homer, a picture of Dr. Marvin Monroe can be seen.
- Marge, Lisa and Maggie do not appear during this segment.
Halloween names[]
- Dan Castellaneta's Halloween nickname (for both his consulting producer and starring credits) is "Heeeere's DANNY!", a reference to The Shining.
- This also serves as a call back to the "Treehouse of Horror V" Shinning segment.
- Dan Vebber's nickname is "H.P Lovebbercraft", a reference to H.P Lovecraft.
- Drew Carey's Halloween nickname is "Boo Scary from The Fright is Right!" which refers to his status as the host for The Price is Right.
Goofs[]
Intro[]
- When the family sits on the couch, Homer's hand is in front of Marge, not behind her.
- When Maggie goes to kill the Furious Four, Sideshow Bob is still pulling down the tree to let O'Reilly down. However, O'Reilly had already dismounted to start the river dance.
Dry Hard[]
- When Ralph steps off his platform, he is heard saying "Whee!" as he flies across the frame. However, if you pause correctly, he is already dead and his mouth is unmoving.
- Sarah Wiggum cried when Ralph died, but her voice cannot be heard.
- The order of cars going to Mr. Burns's reservoir changes between scenes.
- Wendell was not near Nelson when he helps surround Lisa, but his body is shown on Nelson's sword.
BFF R.I.P.[]
- There was no reason why Lisa was blamed for the murder of Sherri and Terri. It happened right besides Janey's funeral and people probably saw that Lisa did not push the tombstone as she was talking with them.
- When Lisa mounts on the motorbike, her right arm goes in the front of the bike's headlights.
- After Snake Jailbird stabbed Chief Wiggum in the neck with a shiv his tattoo disappears.
Moefinger[]
- The shelf at Moe's tavern was full of bottles, but on the next scene, it is full of empty beer mugs.
- Kearney stated that all the bullies were all thirteen.
