Toy Gory[]
- In the poster of "Treehouse of horror XXXI", as Bart is going to get stabbed in the head, Milhouse Van Houten runs towards Bart to prevent him from getting stabbed in the head. This was excluded from the episode proper.
- "Toy Gory" is a parody of the Toy Story movies.
- The toys gain sentience once outside of a human character's view, like all the toys in Toy Story.
- The toys then gain sentience in front of a human character to enact their revenge against Bart for destroying their brethren, much like the first Toy Story movie where they do the same against Sid Phillips.
- The way Bart acts during this segment is a reference to Sid Phillips, the antagonist of the first Toy Story who loves torturing toys for fun.
- How Bart is turned into a string toy is a reference to Woody, who himself is a string toy.
- Krusty and Radioactive Man's roles in this segment are very similar to that of Woody and Buzz.
- In his destruction spree, Bart blows up a T-Rex toy, which is a reference to the toy T-rex Rex; he also blends some Army Men.
- The lamp in Bart's treehouse is Luxo Jr., one of the two characters in Pixar's first ever short and the mascot for the studio.
- The toys gain sentience once outside of a human character's view, like all the toys in Toy Story.
- This segment features toys making an effort to kill their owners; while this kind of plotline is (loosely) featured in the Child's Play movies, the 2023 film Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, depicting some of Christopher Robin's toys, especially Winnie the Pooh and Piglet, attempting to kill their owner, would depict such a scenario. However, the reasons involved neglect rather than physical abuse.
- While the Winnie-the-Pooh franchise has long been affiliated with The Walt Disney Company, the producer of Toy Story and current owners of The Simpsons, Blood and Honey was made after the original 1926 book entered the public domain in the United States.
- Individually, aside from the TCM gag, "Toy Gory" is the first episode of the series to be entirely done in CGI. Before this, each full-length episode and segment in each anthology episode were done in 2D animation, with "Treehouse of Horror VI"'s "Homer³" and "Treehouse of Horror XXVIII"'s "Coralisa" having certain segments be animated in CG albeit used sparingly for alternative worlds in those stories.
- The intro to "Treehouse of Horror XXVIII" was done entirely in CG as well.
- A majority of the Season 25 episode "Brick Like Me" features CGI animation.
- Ben Mankiewicz interrupting the Debbie Reynolds movie The Swellest Slum on TCM by stating that they will no longer air the movie and announcing after the movie will be "nothing" after a character utters a racial slur is an apparent reference to classic films such as Yankee Doodle Dandy shown on TCM as well as classic films such as the original Dumbo on Disney+ and Gone With the Wind on HBO Max containing content/trigger warnings and being re-examined due to offensive scenes.
Into the Homer-verse[]
- This is the fourth Treehouse of Horror to feature different versions of Homer, following Treehouse of Horror XIII's "Send in the Clones", Treehouse of Horror XXIII's "Bart and Homer's Excellent Adventure", and Treehouse of Horror XXV's "The Others".
- This is the first time that an episode features different versions of Mr. Burns.
- However, The Simpsons: Bart vs. the World had featured bosses that were different versions of Burns. Only they're his relatives.
- "Into the Homer-verse" is a parody of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
- During "Into the Homer-verse", Frog Prince from Treehouse of Horror XII's "Wiz Kids" segment appears.
- Homer-Barbera is a parody of the old Hanna-Barbera cartoons.
- Disney Princess Homer is a parody of the Disney Princesses.
- Video Game Homer is a parody of Mario from the Super Mario franchise, including it's sound effects.
- Anime Homer is a parody of various Anime characters.
- Black and White Homer is a parody of Humphrey Bogart's character from the 1942 romantic drama film, Casablanca, though, he is also playing off on Spider-Man Noir's appearance in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
- As the 8-bit version of Homer is sent into the normal Simpsons universe, he says "ANNOYED GRUNT", which is the script name for "D'oh".
Be Nine, Rewind[]
- "Be Nine, Rewind" is a a parody of the TV series Russian Doll and possibly the movie Happy Death Day due to the events happening on Lisa's birthday. Also mentions similar films like Groundhog Day having the main character reliving the same day over and over again. (Also similar to other time loop films.)
- Although the hospital scene was in 3D, the ending scene was still in 2D like other Treehouse of Horror series.
- Lisa turns 9 in this segment. As this is non-canon, Lisa will stay 8 years old.
- The episode’s title is a play on the Jack Black movie Be Kind Rewind, which came out the same year as the 19th Treehouse of Horror.
Credits[]
- Carolyn Omine's credit "Corona Omine" is possibly a reference to the "Coronavirus".
- The Scream on the Gracie Films was replaced with Daphne Blake screaming with her heart beating fast.
Trivia[]
- Simpsons creator Matt Groening's other cartoon Futurama debuted a parallel universe in 2001, eight years before Family Guy's multi-verse which was featured in the 2009 episode "Road to the Multiverse". It also debuted 17 years before the multi-universes featured in the 2018 Spider-Man movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which "Into The Homer-verse" parodied.
- This episode was released early for viewers who signed up for an exclusive viewing through Decider on October 14, 2020.
- This episode was going to air on October 18, 2020, but was postponed to November 1, 2020 in the US due to Game 7 of the NLCS. The episode did air on its originally scheduled airdate on Citytv in Canada.
- This is the first Treehouse of Horror episode to premiere in November in 10 years since season 22's "Treehouse of Horror XXI" on November 7, 2010.
- In the Twitter preview of the episode, there were a few errors. They were later fixed in the TV airing.
- To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Treehouse of Horror series, the clips from the past 30 Treehouse of Horrors in reverse chronological order are used in the credits for this episode as a tribute which shows an image representing each segment in a countdown order starting from the most recent, which was "When Hairy Met Slimy" ("Treehouse of Horror XXX") to the very first, "Bad Dream House" ("Treehouse of Horror").
- Airing wise, this is to be the series' last episode to have white actors voice act as non-white characters. Everyone on the crew of the show was forced to stop doing this stuff because of the most recent at the time George Floyd and Black Lives Matter protests in mid-2020 after Floyd was murdered, and now they resorted to using voice actors that are the same color of their character's skin.
Goofs[]
- Strangely, Maggie doesn’t appear in the hospital scene in Toy Gory. She also not in the scene ‘Into the Homer-Verse’.
- In Be Nine, Rewind, Allison Taylor doesn’t appear in the 2nd and 3rd cake scene.
