Vietnam (Vietnamese: Việt Nam), officially the Socialist Republic of Vietnam (Vietnamese: Cộng hòa xã hội chủ nghĩa Việt Nam), is a country in Southeast Asia.
History[]
Vietnam can seen on Bart's globe.[1]
Lisa writes newspaper article through an old mimeograph Principal Skinner had used in Vietnam.[2]
On the student celebrate the start of summer vacation, Principal Skinner remarks to Groundskeeper Willie that he hadn't seen "such unfettered hurly-burly since the fall of Saigon." Later after Kamp Krusty is taken over by Bart and the other campers due the poor conditions Kent Brockman remarked it was worst then anything he saw in Vietnam, Afghanistan or Iraq.[3]
The title card for the old TV show "The Voiceover Years" has 2 teenagers making out on the couch while the screen of the nearby TV set has the famous "Saigon Execution" photograph.
Vietnam War[]

Seymour Skinner surrounded by the Viet Cong in 1968
Many of the references to Vietnam in The Simpsons are about the Vietnam War which was between South Vietnam and the communist North Vietnam and its allied guerilla forces in South Vietnam known as the Viet Cong. The involvement of the United States in the Vietnam War on the side of South Vietnam began in the 1950s and greatly escalated in 1965 until its withdrawal in 1973.
Principal Seymour Skinner is a veteran of this war which was first mentioned in the third season episode "Separate Vocations" when upon seeing the Springfield Elementary's school mascot statue egged and toilet papered laments to himself, "I saw some awful things in 'Nam but you really have to wonder at the mentality that would desecrate a helpless puma." This quick mention was just meant by the writers as a throwaway joke, but his experience in and immediately after Vietnam became a major part of Principal Skinner's character.
Other Vietnam veterans include Goose Gladwell ("Whoa, I must warn you, sir. I was a Green Beret in Vietnam. The things I saw there are what made me crazy!"), the Saloon Bartender at Ye Olde Animatronic Saloon ("I got this metal ass in 'Nam defending this country for lazy jerks like you.") and Clyde, whose sob story single-handily stops Marge's plan to finally put out the Springfield tire fire.
Stacy Lovell, creator of the Malibu Stacy dolls, told Lisa the company is no longer hers, "Not since I was forced out in 1974. They said my way of thinking just wasn't cost-effective. Well, that, and...I was funneling profits to the Vietcong."
