Whacking Day was a public holiday celebrated by the citizens on Springfield.
History[]
Whacking Day was held every May 10th, when the citizens of Springfield would drive snakes to the center of the town and beat them to death. The holiday was controversial, being described as "distasteful and puerile" by a panel of hillbillies.
Whacking Day was said to have been invented by town founder Jebediah Springfield in 1775. However, as Bart Simpson noticed, the supposed founding of the holiday conflicted with the attack on Fort Ticonderoga, which Jebediah had led on the same day. Upon further research, he discovered that Whacking Day was actually invented in 1924 as an excuse to beat up Springfield's population of Irish immigrants.
Lisa Simpson vehemently objected to Whacking Day due to the cruelty towards snakes. With the help of Bart and Barry White, she was able to lure all of the snakes into the Simpson home to portect them from the townsfolk. After Bart revealed the true history of Whacking Day to them, and Lisa pointed out how snakes had been beneficial to Springfield, the citizens agreed to give up the holiday.
