The title of the episode is a parody of the 1984 book, What to Expect When You're Expecting.
The song Oh Yeah by Yello plays during the Duff Beer commercial. The song was the inspiration for Duffman's catchphrase.
When Homer was singing this line "Let them rock the night away!" while he was coming out with a blanket, upstairs, Bart is waving the flag of France.
The couch gag may be a reference to the 1966 movie Fantastic Voyage (or the cartoon series of the same name), where a group of scientists are miniaturized and travel inside the human body. In this case, the Simpsons family travels inside Homer's body.
At the end of this episode, they reference the "Modern Family" intro.
On the superhero pub crawl, Homer, Lenny, Carl and Barney go dressed as the Fantastic Four.
This is the second time a Simpson had joined belief that is associated with dark magic but the results are actually revealed to be a logical explanation the first time was Lisa almost being a witch in Rednecks and Broomsticks and revealing that the curse the witches made was actually a mixture of moonshine and water caused by the rednecks and Homer.
