- The title of the episode is a parody of the 1984 book, What to Expect When You're Expecting.
- The song Oh Yeah by Yello plays during the Duff Beer commercial. The song was the inspiration for Duffman's catchphrase.
- When Homer was singing this line "Let them rock the night away!" while he was coming out with a blanket upstairs, Bart is waving the flag of France.
- The couch gag may be a reference to the 1966 movie Fantastic Voyage (Or the cartoon series of the same name), where a group of scientists are miniaturized and travel inside the human body. In this case, the Simpsons family travels inside Homer's body.
- At the end of this episode, they reference the Modern Family intro.
- Martin's pointillist painting parodies A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of Grande Jatte by Georges Seurat.
- Fit-Fat Tony's racehorses could possibly be a reference to The Godfather.
- The song the horse plays, when it is implied to be a gay male, is "It's Raining Men" by The Weather Girls, previously revealed to be Homer and Smithers' favorite song.
- The song playing during Homer's flashback is "Feels Like The First Time" by Foreigner.
- The song Let Them Play was referencing the song “Another Day” from the Broadway musical “Les Misérables.”

- God wasn't seen as one of the people coming out of the frame at the end.
- In art class, Bart said he hated art, even though he had no problem with it as shown in ''The Color Yellow'', “Stealing First Base,” and “Exit Through the Kwik-E-Mart.”
- After Homer tells Bart that the horse doesn’t like girls, Bart tells him he doesn’t like girls either, despite that he had several girlfriends and crushes like Jenny, Darcy, Mary Spuckler, et cetera.
- It could be possible that Bart meant that he didn't like them because his relationships with girls didn't end very well.

- There are two blackboard gags for this episode. The first is "You can't play April Fools jokes on April 27th.” And the second is "April showers do not bring Matt Lauers.”
- It is revealed that Shauna is Superintendent Chalmers' daughter.
- On the superhero pub crawl, Homer, Lenny, Carl, and Barney go dressed as the Fantastic Four.
- This is the second time a Simpson had joined belief that is associated with dark magic but the results are actually revealed to be a logical explanation the first time was Lisa almost being a witch in "Rednecks and Broomsticks" and revealing that the curse the witches made was actually a mixture of moonshine and water caused by the rednecks and Homer.
