- The episode title is a reference to The Beatles 1966 song "Yellow Submarine".
- The Song "Skinner" is a parody of the song "Django" from Django Unchained.
- The moment when a man and a woman are in space is a reference to the movie Gravity.
- Spugna Roberto Quadrati Pantaloni is a Italian parodied version of SpongeBob SquarePants. A real Italian version exists here.
- The scene in which Principal Skinner says "I am the law" is a reference to the catchphrase of British comic book character Judge Dredd.
- The "Pro Movie" video-editing software Bart uses to manipulate audio of President Obama when prank-calling Skinner is based off Apple's Final Cut Pro video-editing application.
- The Irish Krusty saying sad stories could be a reference to Angela's Ashes and when he says that his mother filled her pockets full of rocks and walked into the sea, it references when Irish wives lose their husband they commit suicide to avoid responsibilities.
- The quote that Romanian Krusty is president for life Krusty is a reference to the dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu, he was removed from office and executed along with his wife Elena on Christmas Day 1989, just eight days after the first ever Simpsons episode was broadcast.
- The cup Homer had when he approached to Bart on the pier was a Pig Gulp cup which is a parody of a Big Gulp cup from 7-Eleven.
- The background noise in the submarine when Milhouse fires the torpedo is the same background noise used for the U.S.S. Enterprise in Star Trek: The Original Series.
- The ad for the submarine parodies Free Willy.

- A number of characters' surnames, as well as first names, are revealed in this episode on THIS list
- Database's first name is revealed to be Kyle.
- Wendell's surname is Queasly. (as a reference to his frequent vomiting)
- Janey's surname is now Jackson instead of Powell or Henderson.
- Sherri and Terri's surnames are revealed to be Mackleberry.
- Dolph's surname is Shapiro, at least in this episode.
- This is the second episode in which setting up an embarrassing identification for someone facing law trouble occurs. The first was "The Monkey Suit".
- Homer says he will need to fake his own death sometime and he faked his own death in "Mother Simpson".
- It is quite possible that this episode takes place prior to the aforementioned one but it is not known.
- The tagline "Yvan eht nioj" ("Join the Navy" spelled backwards) is seen during the film promoting the submarine ride. The tagline was previously seen in "New Kids on the Blecch".

Censorship[]
- Channel 4 in the UK edited the following scenes:
- The line in Skinner's Western theme, "When you spit/He's got the balls" was cut.
- Skinner's fake ID that has his name down as Dick Fiddler was digitally altered to "D Fiddler"
- The Jamaican version of The Itchy & Scratchy Show, where Itchy burns and smokes Scratchy like marijuana, was cut.
- Despite these cuts, there were no edits to Skinner imagining himself being incarcerated in an Old West whorehouse filled with prostitutes who look like his mother or the Italian version of SpongeBob SquarePants where Spunga Roberto gives Squidardo a land mine.
